I think that one reason that the common poppy was adopted as a symbol of remembrance was that it quickly gets a foothold in disturbed ground, such as bomb sites.

CANTALOUPE is the correct spelling for the melon thing, but CANTALOUP is an acceptable alternative. Google reveals that CANTELOPE is also widely used.
